Session 2 of 4

Chapter 4. Finish

The angel comes again to speak to Zechariah, and show him some things:

  • He shows him a gold lampstand with seven lamps;
  • And there is a bowl on top of the lampstand;
  • There are two olive trees, one on each side of the lampstand;
  • Zechariah admits that he does not know what this is;
  • The angel explains it to him: this is the word of the Lord;
  • The Lord is speaking to Zerubbabel;
  • “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit” says the Lord;
  • The Lord will give Zerubbabel His spirit to do great things;
  • Zechariah hears the Lord speaking to him:
  • He tells him Zerubbabel has built the temple foundation;
  • Now, he will be able to continue and finish the temple;
  • The prophet asks about the two olive trees;
  • The Lord says these are the anointed ones who serve the Lord.

Chapter 5. Wickedness

The prophet has a vision of a flying scroll, 10 cubits wide, 20 cubits long:

  • The angel explains: this scroll has the curses of all the earth;
  • The top side are the thieves; the bottom side are the liars;
  • The scroll will destroy all the thieves and all the liars;
  • Then the prophet sees a basket moving over the earth;
  • The angel explains: the woman in the basket is wickedness;
  • There is a lid for the basket made of lead;
  • He pushes the woman down and throws the lid over the basket;
  • The prophet then sees two flying women having large wings;
  • They fly off carrying the basket through the air;
  • The angel explains: they are taking the basket to Babylon;
  • There, they are building a house for the basket;
  • When the house is ready, they will set the basket on its base.

Chapter 6. Gift

The prophet has a vision of four chariots being pulled by horses:

  • The horses are all of four colors: red, black, white, dappled;
  • These are four spirits sent out by the Lord to watch the earth;
  • The Lord tells Zechariah to receive a gift from the captives;
  • They have brought silver and gold from Babylon for Zechariah;
  • The prophet is to take the gift and go to the house of Josiah;
  • There, he is to fashion the silver and gold into a crown;
  • He is to place this crown on the head of the high priest, Joshua;
  • He is to declare that Joshua shall rule as the high priest;
  • He will be called the ‘Branch’ and oversee building the temple;
  • And the crown shall be kept as a memorial in the temple;
  • Many of the captives will come back and build the temple.

End of Session 2 of 4 of the book of Zechariah.

  1. This was a tough one to understand. Thanks for studying and breaking it down into understandable pieces! I didn’t remember that the scripture “not by might nor by power but by my spirit” was in Zechariah. That’s a good one to hang onto!
