Micah

Session 1 of 2

Introduction to Micah:

Writer: Micah.

Scope: A contemporary of Isaiah and Hosea, Micah prophesizes between the years 750 b.c. to 686 b.c. He foretells the fall of Samaria in the Northern Kingdom, Israel, and the devastation of Judah, the Southern Kingdom.

Chapter 1. Captivity

Micah prophecies when kings Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah ruled in Judah:

  • Micah is from a small town called Moresheth;
  • The Lord speaks about things to come in Judah and Israel;
  • He will punish them for their transgressions;
  • Samaria and Jerusalem are the guilty places;
  • The Lord will crush and burn Samaria into desolation;
  • All the idols will be broken down, destroyed;
  • The Lord mourns for Jerusalem as they will suffer disaster;
  • They shall be taken into captivity.

Chapter 2. Heritage

The Lord says the heritage of His people has been changed:

  • He says certain people lay in bed devising evil things;
  • And then in the morning they go out and do them;
  • The people of the Lord are supposed to do only good;
  • But they are accusing the prophets of speaking trivial things;
  • His people are turning into thieves and liars;
  • The Lord tells them this is not their heritage;
  • He pleads with them to turn away from evil things;
  • He intends to gather the remnant who remain of His people;
  • Then they will have a king, but the Lord will be their leader.

Chapter 3. Power

The prophet, Micah, says he has received power from the Spirit of the Lord:

  • He tells the leaders of Judah and Israel to listen to him;
  • He condemns the leaders: He says they hate good and love evil;
  • They are destroying their people; they have done only evil;
  • Someday they will call to the Lord, but He will not hear them;
  • They have been very evil; He will not even look at them;
  • They have been listening to false prophets, diviners and seers;
  • They are not hearing anything from God;
  • But Micah says he is full of power from the Spirit of the Lord;
  • He is to declare the sins of Jacob and Israel;
  • He says their leaders, their prophets, are all working for money;
  • He declares their judges are guilty of taking bribes;
  • The leaders, prophets, and judges say they follow the Lord;
  • The prophet says disaster is coming to Zion;
  • Jerusalem is going to become nothing but ruins.
