Proverbs – Session 3 of 3
Chapter 21. Contentious
Certain conditions at home can be difficult to live with:
- It is better to stay in a corner of a housetop,
- Than to live with a contentious woman;
- It is better to live in the wilderness,
- Than with a contentious and angry woman.
Chapter 22. Child
Bringing up a child in the right way will help them later in life:
- Train up a child in the way he should go,
- And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
- Foolishness is in the heart of a child,
- But the rod of correction will drive it out.
Chapter 23. Wine
Drinking wine can lead to serious consequences:
- Who has woe? Sorrow? Contentions?
- Complaints? Strange wounds? Red eyes?
- Those who drink too much wine;
- Wine can go down smoothly,
- But sting like a poisonous snake;
- It can give you hallucinations, bad dreams;
- Do not mingle with heavy drinkers,
- It can become an addiction.
Chapter 24. Envy
Envy can lead to trouble:
- Do not envy the things of evil people;
- Don’t associate with them either;
- They can be trouble makers;
- Do not envy the wicked,
- Their lamps will be put out.
Chapter 25. Truths
Proverbs of Solomon are copied during Hezekiah’s reign:
- A king discerns the ways of God;
- Speak softly in the presence of a king;
- Speak with your neighbor before taking him to court;
- Deliver messages honestly and truthfully;
- Eating too much honey will make one sick;
- When visiting neighbors, don’t stay too long;
- Give food and water to your enemy—
- The Lord will reward you.
- Practice self-control always.
Chapter 26. Fools
It is not right to honor fools:
- Don’t try to argue with a fool;
- Don’t tell a fool to deliver a message;
- A man who is wise in his own eyes is a fool.
Chapter 27. Reputation
As iron sharpens iron, one man can sharpen another:
- Don’t praise yourself, let another person praise you;
- As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the man;
- A man’s true value is what people think of him.
Chapter 28. Wicked
Wicked people are cowards; good people are courageous:
- Lawless people honor the wicked;
- Righteous people oppose them;
- There is happiness when righteousness rules;
- People are fearful, try to hide, when the wicked rule;
- A wicked ruler is like a wild animal ruling the poor;
- When the wicked come to power, people hide;
- When good people rule, people rejoice.
Chapter 29. Justice
The king establishes the land by justice:
- The righteous consider the poor,
- But the wicked do not understand;
- A fool cannot hold his tongue;
- The wise man speaks carefully;
- The king who judges with honesty
- Will be remembered forever;
- Justice for man comes from the Lord.
Chapter 30. Agur
The words of Agur:
- I have not learned all wisdom or the knowledge of God;
- Every word of God is perfect;
- Teach me more about God;
- I have learned many things by watching nature.
Chapter 31. Epilogue
The words of King Lemuel as taught to him by his mother:
- Kings should not drink alcoholic beverages;
- They can confuse their thinking and behavior;
- Epilogue: Here is a wife of noble character:
- Her husband has full confidence in her;
- She makes right decisions in everything;
- She raises her children wisely;
- The woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
