Session 5
Chapter 13. Blood
Some people tell Jesus about Pilate killing some Galileans:
- He had mingled their blood with their sacrifices;
- Jesus tells the people: repent or they will perish;
- And those eighteen men who died when the tower fell:
- They were no worse sinners than any other sinners;
- But everyone must repent or they will also perish;
- Then Jesus tells a parable about a fig tree in a vineyard;
- For three years the fig tree has borne no fruit;
- The owner tells the vineyard manager to cut it down;
- The manager wants to fertilize it one more year;
- After that, if it has no fruit, then it should be cut down;
- In a synagogue, on the Sabbath, Jesus sees a woman;
- For eighteen years she has suffered, not able to raise up;
- Seeing her, Jesus calls her and heals her infirmity;
- The ruler of the synagogue is furious with Jesus;
- The ruler says Jesus is not allowed to heal on the Sabbath;
- Jesus has one word for the synagogue ruler: Hypocrite!
- You lead your livestock to water on the Sabbath;
- Satan has caused this woman to suffer for eighteen years;
- And now she is freed from her infirmity, no longer bent over;
- When Jesus says these things, the rulers are shamed;
- And the crowd rejoices at the great things Jesus is doing;
- Then Jesus says the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed;
- When planted, it can grow and become a great tree;
- The kingdom of God is also like leaven;
- A small amount can spread and leaven three measures of meal;
- Jesus preaches in towns on His way toward Jerusalem;
- Someone with Jesus asks Him why so few are being converted:
- Jesus tells them the gate is narrow, and many will not enter;
- They may say they knew Jesus, but He will not know them;
- He will say: Depart from Me all you who did evil things;
- You will see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of God;
- But you will be forced out with weeping and gnashing of teeth;
- In the kingdom of God, the last will be first, and the first last;
- Then Pharisees urge Jesus to leave as Herod is looking for Him;
- Jesus tells them to tell that fox that Jesus will set the timetable;
- Jesus laments: Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how I longed to help you;
- But you killed the prophets, and those sent to you;
- Now, you are left desolate, and you will only see Me again,
- When: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Chapter 14. Pit
Jesus goes to the home of a Pharisee to have dinner:
- It is the Sabbath day and people are watching Him;
- There is a man there who suffers with dropsy;
- Jesus asks: Is it lawful for Him to heal on the Sabbath?
- They do not answer; Jesus heals the man, lets him go;
- Jesus asks the Pharisees a question:
- If their ox or donkey fell into a pit on the Sabbath,
- Would they not immediately pull him out of the pit?
- They do not offer Jesus an answer;
- Jesus presents a parable to them about humility;
- At a wedding ceremony do not take the best seat;
- But take a lesser seat until you are invited to move up;
- For whoever exalts himself will be abased;
- And he who humbles himself will be exalted;
- Jesus tells his dinner host: Invite the poor to dinner,
- They cannot repay, but you will be rewarded with the just;
- Then Jesus says: A certain man invited people to a dinner;
- But all those invited had various excuses for not coming;
- Angry, the man sent servants to bring in the poor and lame;
- Then he sent servants to bring in everyone they could find;
- The man said none of those he had first invited
- Would ever taste anything of his supper;
- Large crowds are following Jesus everywhere;
- He tells them only those who leave everything behind
- And bear their cross can come with Him and be His disciple;
- He says anyone who would follow Him must count the cost;
- And to be His disciple must forsake everything;
- They cannot be like salt that has lost its flavor;
- For that salt is worthless and will be thrown out.
