Session 3
Chapter 9. Authority
Jesus calls a group meeting of His twelve disciples:
- There, He gives them authority over demons and diseases;
- Then He sends them out to preach the gospel and to heal;
- His instructions: carry nothing, not even an empty bag;
- They are to stay wherever people will receive them;
- But if they are not received, they are to leave that town,
- Shaking the dust off their feet as a testimony against them;
- The ruler, Herod, hears things about a man he has not met;
- One story is that John, whom he had beheaded, has come back;
- The apostles return and begin to tell Jesus their stories;
- He wants to be alone with them, but the crowds gather around;
- Jesus receives the crowd and heals the sick brought to Him;
- Late in the day, He tells the disciples to feed the entire crowd;
- The disciples say they have a total of five loaves and two fish;
- The crowd numbers about five thousand men plus families;
- Jesus tells them to divide the people into groups of fifty;
- He blesses the food, brakes it for the disciples to hand out;
- After all have eaten, there are twelve baskets of leftovers;
- Later, Jesus is praying alone when the disciples join Him;
- He asks them who the crowds are saying He is;
- Their answer: People say He is various men from history;
- Jesus wants to know what the disciples are saying He is;
- Peter says He is the Christ of God;
- Jesus demands the disciples to keep this knowledge secret;
- He says He will be killed and then raised the third day;
- To follow Jesus, anyone must bear their cross daily;
- Later, He takes Peter, James, and John to a mountain to pray;
- There, Jesus’s clothes change, become glistening white;
- Moses and Elijah are talking with Him, speaking of His death;
- A voice from heaven says: This is My beloved Son, hear Him;
- They leave the mountain and keep these events secret;
- The next day, a large crowd again gathers around Jesus;
- The father of a young man with a demon brings him to Jesus;
- The disciples have been unable to remove this demon;
- Jesus removes the demon, heals the young man;
- The crowds are amazed at all the things Jesus has done;
- But Jesus tells his disciples He is about to be taken by men;
- As they walked along a road, Jesus invites a man to follow Him;
- The man agrees, but says first he must bury his father;
- Jesus tells the man to let the dead bury their own dead.
Chapter 10. Harvest
Later, Jesus appoints seventy-two others to go before Him into the cities:
- He says the harvest is great, but the laborers are few;
- He commissions them to go to the homes that receive them;
- They are to heal the sick, and say the kingdom of God is near;
- A city that rejects them will be treated worse than Sodom;
- The seventy-two return to Jesus with joyful reports:
- They say even the demons are subject to them in His name;
- Jesus says to rejoice because their names are written in heaven;
- He tells the disciples they are blessed by what they have seen;
- A lawyer asks Jesus how he can inherit eternal life;
- Jesus asks him how he reads and interprets the law;
- The lawyer says: Love God, and love your neighbor;
- Then he tests Jesus by asking: Who is his neighbor?
- Jesus tells him about a man walking on the road to Jericho;
- At some point he is accosted, beaten, robbed, left half dead;
- Two different religious leaders pass by, will not help him;
- Then a Samaritan comes along and provides aid to the man;
- Jesus asks the lawyer which of those was a good neighbor;
- He says the last one; Jesus tells him to go and do likewise;
- Later, Jesus is invited to the home of a woman named Martha;
- She has a sister named Mary who also worships Jesus;
- Martha gets busy preparing things to serve their guest;
- She asks Jesus to tell Mary she should help in serving;
- Jesus tells Martha that Mary has chosen to do well for Him;
- And He will not tell her to stop.
