Obadiah

Introduction to Obadiah:

Writer: Obadiah.

Scope: Little is known about this prophet and he does not date himself, or include very much background information in his writings. He was, possibly, a contemporary of Jeremiah. His prophecy is directed toward Edom, a historical enemy of Israel and Judah, founded by Jacob’s twin brother, Esau, in the mountainous region south of the Dead Sea, and southeast from Judah. Edom was known to boast about her riches, and had gloated over the captivity of Judah who was taken into exile by the Babylonians.

Pride

Obadiah has a vision; He sees the Lord talking about the nation of Edom:

  • A messenger has been sent to all the nations concerning Edom;
  • The Lord is sending them together to attack Edom;
  • Pride has deceived them into a false sense of security;
  • They thought their mountains would keep out attackers;
  • But the Lord says they will become a despised nation;
  • They will be dragged out of their mountains and put down;
  • Even the friends of Edom will turn against them;
  • Every man from the mountains of Esau will be killed;
  • They had engaged in violence against their brother, Jacob;
  • When foreigners invaded Judah, Edom would not help;
  • They even participated in plundering Jerusalem;
  • The Lord says Edom should not have celebrated Judah’s defeat;
  • The harm they brought against Judah will come back on them;
  • But deliverance and holiness are coming to the house of Jacob;
  • Jacob’s people will prosper, Esau’s people will be destroyed;
  • The captives of Israel and Judah will be returned;
  • They will be saved, and will possess all the lands of Canaan;
  • Their kingdom will be the Lord’s kingdom.

End of the book of Obadiah.
