Amos
Session 3 of 3
Chapter 7. Visions
The Lord gives the prophet some special visions of the future:
- He sees a swarm of locusts coming to destroy the crops;
- Amos prays, the Lord relents and stops the locusts;
- Then the prophet envisions a great fire coming;
- Again, he prays, and the Lord spares Israel;
- In another vision the Lord asks Amos what he sees;
- The prophet responds that he sees a plumb line;
- The Lord says He is not going to spare Israel again;
- He is going to punish them, and punish King Jeroboam;
- Amaziah, the priest, tells the king Amos is talking about him;
- Amos is saying the king is going to be killed;
- And Israel is going to be taken away from their own land;
- Amaziah tells Amos to get away, go prophecy back in Judah;
- Amos says he was not a prophet, he was a farmer;
- But he was called by the Lord to prophecy to Israel;
- The Lord gives Amos some words to say to Amaziah;
- His wife will become a prostitute; his children will be killed;
- And his land will be parceled out;
- Israel will become captives, taken out of their own land.
Chapter 8. End
The Lord shows Amos the end is coming for Israel:
- He shows Amos a basket of summer fruit,
- Asks him what he sees; Amos says it’s a basket of fruit;
- The Lord says this is the end of my people, Israel;
- He says He is not going to spare them anymore;
- The Lord says there are going to be dead bodies everywhere;
- Israel has been cheating, selling contaminated grain;
- All kinds of evil behavior; the Lord says the end is coming;
- It’s going to be bad, they will be in mourning over their losses;
- The sun is going to go dark, every head will become bald;
- The Lord will send a famine, not of bread or water;
- It will be a famine of hearing the word of the Lord;
- People will be looking everywhere, but not hearing;
- Israel will fall to never rise again.
Chapter 9. Rebuilt
The Lord says the days are coming when the house of David will be rebuilt:
- But not so for the nation of Israel;
- The Lord will destroy with the sword every last man of Israel;
- He says no one will be able to hide from His punishment;
- The Lord created the earth and knows all things;
- He saved Israel from a life of slavery in Egypt;
- But they have become a sinful people, and He will destroy them;
- However, He will not destroy all the people of Jacob;
- He intends to see the house of David rebuilt;
- He will raise it from the ruins and have it rebuilt as in old times;
- He will free His people who are captives and bring them home;
- Along with all the Gentiles who are serving the Lord;
- His people will prosper, and live in their own land forever.
