Amos

Session 2 of 3

Chapter 4. Fishhooks

The Lord will one day take out His people as it were with fishhooks:

  • The women of Samaria are guilty of oppressing the poor;
  • They tell their husbands to bring them wine;
  • One day the Lord will take them out like with fishhooks;
  • When they leave the city, it will be through broken walls;
  • The Lord mocks Israel for their phony worship
  • He has tried many things to persuade them to repent;
  • He has punished them with drought, plague, and locusts;
  • He has even killed some of their young men, and their horses;
  • But they will not change their ways and return to Him;
  • Finally, He tells them: “Prepare to meet your God, O Israel”;
  • This is the God of all creation Who sees, knows everything.

Chapter 5. Seek

The Lord says Israel should seek Him and live:

  • The Lord mourns for Israel: She has fallen, will never rise;
  • He tells His people: “Seek the Lord and live”;
  • But they will not find Him in any place of idol worship;
  • The people hate those who speak right things to them;
  • Those who build nice houses will never live in them;
  • They will never be able to enjoy all their desired things;
  • The Lord tells them to seek good and not evil;
  • A day of mourning and weeping is coming to the land;
  • The Lord hates their phony feasts and burnt offerings;
  • He wants them to do justice and righteousness;
  • But they have made themselves idols which they worship;
  • The Lord will send them into captivity beyond Damascus.

Chapter 6. Alarm

The Lord sends His alarm to the people of Zion:

  • He warns them: they should not put their trust in Samaria;
  • He warns them about being unconcerned over the future;
  • They are living the good life in the luxury of Samaria;
  • But they are facing trouble: they will be taken as captives;
  • Samaria will be destroyed, and everything in it;
  • The Lord will inspire an enemy nation to attack Israel.

End of Session 2 of 3 of the book of Amos.

  1. These warnings shine a bright light on the amazing lengths to which God will go to get people to turn to Him. But they also highlight how blind, stubborn and self-willed people can be. So thankful He doesn’t give up on us!
