Hosea – Session 3 of 4

Chapter 7. Mixed

The Lord says Israel has mixed their lives with foreign nations:

  • Israel has become wicked and deceitful;
  • Their hearts have turned away from their God;
  • Their behavior with other nations has been like adultery;
  • No leader in Israel prays to God;
  • They have mixed themselves with Egypt, Assyria, others;
  • The Lord says He will discipline them wherever they go;
  • In Egypt, they will be subject to derision.

Chapter 8. Whirlwind

The Lord says Israel has sowed the wind, they are reaping the whirlwind:

  • The Lord says they have broken their covenant with Him;
  • They have made idols of gold and silver to worship them;
  • Israel is overwhelmed by Gentiles, becoming like them;
  • The Lord says He will punish Israel for their sins;
  • They will return to Egypt;
  • Judah has also fallen into sin;
  • The Lord will destroy their cities with fire.

Chapter 9. Harlot

The Lord says Israel has behaved like a harlot, has become a prostitute:

  • It’s like they have fallen into defiled sex and drunkenness;
  • They have aligned themselves with Egypt and Assyria;
  • The Lord will not honor gifts from foreigners;
  • Israel has ignored the prophets, called them insane fools;
  • The Lord says Israel, at one time, was a blessed people;
  • But they joined themselves with idol worshippers;
  • God will kill the illicit children from these unions;
  • Israel will be scattered like homeless among the nations.

Chapter 10. Ashamed

The Lord says Israel will be ashamed because of their own teaching:

  • He says their heart is divided, clinging to right and wrong;
  • Knowing they have sinned against God, they are ashamed;
  • Their golden calf is sent as a gift to the king of Assyria;
  • They are overcome with their shame;
  • They will ask the mountains to fall on them, cover them;
  • They Lord says He will punish both Israel and Judah;
  • The prophet says Israel must become righteous, find mercy;
  • The time has come for them to turn back to the Lord;
  • Disaster is coming; some morning the king will be dethroned.
