Proverbs – Session 2 of 3

Chapter 11. Focused

It is good to stay focused on wisdom and discretion:

  • When pride comes, then comes shame;
  • But with the humble is wisdom;
  • A talebearer reveals secrets, but the faithful doesn’t gossip;
  • A gold ring in a swine’s nose is like
  • A lovely woman who is without discretion;

Chapter 12. Learning

Everyone should keep learning:

  • Those who love instruction love knowledge;
  • But those who hate correction are stupid;
  • A gentle woman gains respect,
  • But ruthless men get rich.
  • Those who work hard will rule,
  • But the lazy will be shamed;
  • Anxiety causes depression, but kind words are cheerful.

Chapter 13. Listening

Listening to good advice is good advice:

  • You should listen to your father’s advice;
  • The righteous dislike lies;
  • People may pretend to be rich but have nothing;
  • Some people who are rich pretend they are poor;
  • Those who won’t pay for good advice will pay in some way:
  • Respecting good advice is worthwhile;
  • People who love their children discipline them;

Chapter 14. Behavior

Proper behavior comes from the fear of the Lord:

  • Those who fear the Lord behave accordingly;
  • Bad behavior indicates a person despises the Lord;
  • Deceitful people are foolish;
  • There is a way that may seem right;
  • But the end of that way leads to spiritual death;
  • The willful sinner will go his own way;
  • But the righteous will follow the Lord;

Chapter 15. Words

People should choose their words carefully:

  • A soft answer turns away wrath,
  • But a harsh word stirs up anger;
  • The lips of the wise speak knowledge,
  • But the heart of the fool does not do so;
  • The Lord hates the thoughts of the wicked,
  • But the words of the pure are pleasant (to the Lord);

Chapter 16. Humility

It is important to maintain humility of heart:

  • Pride goes before destruction,
  • And a haughty spirit before a fall;
  • Better to be of a humble spirit,
  • Than to mingle with the proud;
  • He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty.

Chapter 17. Heart

A cheerful heart is good medicine:

  • If a man pays back evil for good,
  • Evil will never leave his house;
  • A cheerful heart is good medicine,
  • But a crushed spirit dries up the bones;

Chapter 18. Fools

Stay away from people acting like fools:

  • A fool sees no pleasure in understanding,
  • But is happy to state his own opinions;
  • A fool’s speech gives him away,
  • He can be caught in his own words;
  • A person may have many friends,
  • But there can be a friend who is closer than a brother.

Chapter 19. Accept

This proverb tells us to accept instruction:

  • Doing so will make one wise;
  • If you stop listening to good advice,
  • You will never find knowledge;

Chapter 20. Honesty

The Lord demands honesty in dealings:

  • The Lord hates dishonest weights and measures;
  • A righteous man lives with honesty;
  • Good deeds start with children;
