How Much Are We Worth?
By Guest blogger: Rev. H. Wayne Hunter
Scientists can now clone sheep and monkeys, reproducing them by mechanical and technological means. The manipulation of human genes and DNA by artificial, manufactured processes is no longer just science fiction. One day, not too far away, the value of human life will be calculated and translated into monetary consideration. Or, what’s your worth to society?
April 15 of this year, the Christian Church celebrates Good Friday. God, as usual, was 2000 years ahead of us. On the cross at Calvary, He marked the price tag, making public the value of a human soul. Written eternally in the nail-scarred hands, preserved forever in the blood Jesus shed, our price was calculated, considered, and paid. No matter what the world says, no matter how easy or popular abortion, euthanasia, cloning, or poverty, to God, life will forever be precious.
Man, in his pursuit of sophistication, has ended up cheapening himself. Instead of claiming our place of dignity as created in God’s image, some modern people prefer to be the offspring of apes. While God valued us enough to give His only Son to die for us, our culture is using dollars and cents to measure a person’s worth.
This kind of progress will kill us. It is already demeaning humanity. The cross declared our value. The empty grave confirmed God’s approval. You are worth far more than the world will offer. Do not sell out. Remember the cross: God’s appraisal is based on intimate knowledge of the object. In Christ, our value is demonstrated. In Christ, our value is experienced.
